What to Avoid When Buying a Mattress: 8 Common Mistakes

The short answer

Avoid buying a mattress without lying on it, choosing by brand or price alone, assuming harder is better for your back, and testing it for only a few seconds. Also avoid guessing the size, ignoring heat, shopping without your partner, and forgetting to ask about delivery and old-mattress removal.

The eight mistakes at a glance

Most regrets come from the first three. Each one has a simple fix.

Do not buy what you have not tried

The label says “medium firm”, but one brand's medium is another brand's firm. The only reliable test is your own body: lie on your back, then on your side, and stay there for ten minutes.

Ask someone to look at you from behind when you are on your side. If your spine looks straight from neck to tailbone, the firmness is right.

Do not choose by brand or price alone

Good brands make models you will dislike, and a higher price buys thicker comfort layers, not a guarantee that it suits you. At MBF Mattress the range runs from RM 299 to RM 16,528, so set your budget first and compare within it.

Do not forget the practical details

Measure the bedroom, the door and the lift before choosing a size. Ask what delivery costs, how soon it can come, and whether the old mattress will be taken away. Check what the warranty covers and for how long: it differs by brand and model.

Reading only gets you so far. Come lie on them.

Ask us on WhatsApp
01What mattress to stay away from?

Stay away from any mattress you have not lain on, one that is much softer or harder than medium firm unless you know you like it, very thin foam mattresses for everyday adult use, and second-hand mattresses, which may be worn out or unhygienic. Also avoid a mattress with no written warranty.

02What to avoid when buying a mattress?

Avoid buying without lying on it, testing for less than ten minutes, assuming harder is better, and choosing by brand or price alone. Measure your room and lift first, and ask about delivery, old-mattress removal and warranty before you pay.

03How long should I test a mattress in the shop?

At least ten minutes, in the position you actually sleep in. It takes that long for your muscles to relax and for pressure points to show.

04What should I ask before buying a mattress?

Ask the price for your size, what is inside the mattress, how firm it is, what the warranty covers, how soon it can be delivered, and whether your old mattress will be removed.

05Is an expensive mattress always better?

No. A higher price usually means more or better comfort layers, but the right mattress is the one that keeps your spine level and feels comfortable to you.
