Latex vs Pocket Spring vs Memory Foam: Mattress Types Explained

The short answer

Pocket spring mattresses are the all-rounder: supportive, breathable and good at stopping movement crossing the bed. Latex is springy, cool and durable. Memory foam moulds closely to the body but holds more heat unless it is gel-infused. Coconut fibre is the firmest. Many mattresses sold in Malaysia are hybrids: pocket springs underneath with latex or memory foam on top.

Mattress types at a glance

Most of what you feel comes from the top comfort layers; most of the support comes from the core underneath.

Pocket spring

Each spring sits in its own fabric pocket, so pressing one does not pull its neighbours down. That is why a pocket spring mattress keeps a restless partner's movement on their side. Zoned versions, such as the 7-zone springs in Serta's range, are firmer under the hips and softer under the shoulders.

Latex

Latex is made from rubber tree sap, which Malaysia produces. It springs back the moment you move, so turning over is easy. You can buy it as a comfort layer over springs, or as an all-latex mattress with no springs at all.

Memory foam

Memory foam softens with body heat and moulds around you, which spreads pressure away from the shoulders and hips. Standard memory foam sleeps warm, so for Malaysia look for cooling gel memory foam under a cooling fabric.

Coconut fibre

Rubberised coconut fibre is a dense, firm layer that keeps a mattress flat and supportive. It is used on its own for a hard bed or under softer layers to firm up a pocket spring mattress.

01Which type of bed mattress is best?

For most sleepers a pocket spring mattress with a latex or memory foam comfort layer (a hybrid) is the best all-round choice: supportive, breathable, and good at keeping a partner's movement on their side. Choose all-latex if you sleep hot and like a springy feel, memory foam if you want pressure relief, and coconut fibre if you like a hard bed.

02Which mattress type is best for Malaysia's hot weather?

Pocket spring and natural latex mattresses are the most breathable. If you prefer memory foam, choose cooling gel memory foam with a cooling fabric cover.

03Is latex better than pocket spring?

They do different jobs. Latex is a springy, breathable comfort material; pocket springs are a support core. Many mattresses use both, with latex on top of pocket springs.

04Which mattress is best for couples?

A pocket spring or latex mattress, because both limit how much one person's movement is felt by the other. Queen is the usual size for couples and King gives more room.

05What is a hybrid mattress?

A hybrid combines a spring core with a foam or latex comfort layer, for example pocket springs with natural latex or gel memory foam on top.
